what type of lens do i need??

I recently purchased a pentax k-x camera. I am taking stage shoots at beauty pageants and need to know what the best lens is for this job. I currently have the kit lens that came with the camera and it just does not have enough zoom to get those close shots that I want to get. I also am shooting studio head shots what is the best lens for this type of shot?? Thanks so much this is all new to me!

Exactly.

With the facts given so far, the DA* 50-135mm f2.8 would work.

Something along the lines of a 50-135mm f/2.8 or a 70-200mm f/2.8 zoom lens would be a fairly common choice for both situations. Either would let in more light and give significantly more reach than the 18-55mm kit lens, but they are also heavier and much more expensive.

Lower cost options would include A mount and K mount manual lenses. The forum lens reviews will give you an idea of what's available and price ranges:

Better question (imho) is "how far away are subjects?" And, "Are stage shots head only, full body, or?"

And if you are shooting "beauty pageants" and "studio head shots" you would think you would have a better idea of needs and wants.

I know. You have to start somewhere. Bad dog! Bad, bad dog!

If cost is an issue the Tamron 28-75 2.8 is a solid lens and about $350 less than the Pentax 50-135. The Tammy is used by a lot of wedding pros. You have to be pretty far away to need anything longer on a crop sensor camera.
