Why don't you use the optical viewfinder?

The optical viewfinder is faster and (in my opinion) more accurate than Liveview.

Is this not just the camera trying to lock focus?

HCC is right... Auto-Focus will be significantly faster using the viewfinder...

For taking shots at 'odd' angles (think ankle height...) I've used manual focus through liveview (beep assist..) with mixed results... My missuss gets better results at these kind of angles using the articulated screen of her Fuji-HS10... Go figure...

If memory serves me right it zooms in to show you what it has focused on and there are two types of live view focus.
Read the manual it tells you clearly how it works.
I never use live view so I can't help further and I wont read the manual just so I can tell you when you can [I assume ] also read it.

I also have the K-r and that's a feature it has. It zooms in for a second to show you what it's focusing on. I don't remember if the manual said it could be turned off, but I rarely use live-view anyway so it isn't much of an issue. It's a pretty cool feature though. Let's say you're in a crowd and want to take a picture, you put the camera above your head and focus and by zooming it'll let you know if you're catching your subject in focus. It's pretty nifty!
