Shots taken with higher ISO (800, 1600) will have more noise than shots taken at 100, 200, or 400.

If you have ISO set to 'Auto', the camera is choosing and may select a higher value than you'd prefer. I'm not sure how the menu is set up on the K100D, but on my K200D you can set ISO to 'Auto' and then set a range using the control wheel.

It's definitely the Auto ISO. My suggestion would be to read up on Aperture, Shutter Speed, and ISO and try to shoot in Manual mode. That's what I did and it helped me learn a lot.

The ISO setting can increase noise in-camera. Some software creates noise on its own by automatically increasing brightness or exposure levels. Sharpening can make noise show up too. Noise is more visible in shadow areas, where you expect black and get a rainbow of colors. With a more evenly lit subject, you'll see less noise.
