If the other side of the pic is sharp, I am confidence your lens suffered from optical misalignment. But why tease us with a crop, why not post the full size pic for better assessment?

OK, this is old, but I think the cause was a dud and/or dirty UV filter. I've never had that problem before, but I reckon it was causing the ghosting. I printed a test chart and took some pictures of that, then I took the filter off and voila. Then I went out and shot some photos taking good care to get plenty of contrasty lines in the lower right quadrant as those are what show the problems. It seems OK. I've got a better quality (Hoya HMC) on it's way - I've never, ever had this problem with a UV filter before and I've always used one since I stopped using a compact camera.

I might go back to Cambo at the weekend to reproduce what I did with horrid results last weekend. I went back through all the photos I've taken with the camera, those with the 18-55mm lens all seem OK, so do the ones with the old Sigma A 70-200mm - at least the ones I got in focus are!
