one other point that I would like to make here is that you could have had occasionally a bad contact on the camera so that the reported maximum aperture is incorrect.

I have not worked through the possibilities, but that would result in an incorrect reading of the light, and application of the wrong correction factor in the camera for max aperture.

Note that the K10D specifically has an issue where it really needs to know the correct aperture to meter correctly. This is exhibited by the metering behavior with manual aperture lenses where using the green button for exxposure, an F1.4 lens wide open will under expose by 1 - 1.5 srops, expose correctly by F5.6, and over expose by 1.5-2 stops by F 8. The camera is programmed to correct for the metering error by using the max aperture info in the lens mount, and therefore a dirty contact could really screw things up.

Just a WAG on my part, but it may be worth looking into.
