Clifton cameras and Bristol Cameras both do the 55-300mm as part of K-x Kit... They also stock K-r... Have a chat...
Camerabox too... There's loads about!!

The K-x is being sold all over the uk with 55-300mm lens as part of a 'twin lens deal'... Seams they're pairing the K-r with the 50-200mm (like they did with the K-x when I bought mine)
At the time I didn't know any better... Have a chat with a store manager (or 10)... I reckon you'll be able to sort something out.
Cheers for the suggestion - what do you think about this kit:

Pentax K-r Red Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm DAL Lens - Only 489.00 - SRS Microsystems

Look at the bundle deal BELOW the main offer, it's:
Pentax Red Kr & 18-55mm with Tamron 70-300mm

Wow - Thank SO much to everyone for your kind input, much appreciated. I'm just thinking if it's better getting the K-r twin lens kit which includes DAL 18-55mm/DAL 50-200mm or the single lens kit which just includes 18-55mm and then buy Sigma 70-300mm separately? What would you do?

Thanks so much!
When I bought my K10D, I got a "kit" special the store was offering which gave me the Sigma 70-300 free. For my own uses, I found that the range between 55mm and 70mm could be quite usefull and I have since purchased a used F 35-70 Macro to fill the gap and I am currently posting daily with that lens in the Single in January challenge. Deciding on which lens to get is always a difficult decision. For me, I'm somewhat wrestling with it now as I dropped my Sigma late last summer and the zoom doesn't quite work right, it jams on occasion and is no longer smooth. The Af and optical quality weren't affected. I'm considering the 55-300 as an AF replacement zoom rather than another Sigma and keeping the old one for my kayak closeup shooting. The only 50-200 I would consider is the f/2.8 model which works very well with Sigma's 2x doubler. But that is my needs. I also have 135, 200, 300, and 500mm primes, all manual focus which fill much of my needs. All of them together, I paid less than a new 55-300. There are also some good kit deals with the 55-300 and I think I would go with that package if I was starting over. I think overall, the 55-300 is a better all around lens and has better IQ wide open. Still, for daylight shooting in bright light and stopped down, the Sigma does quite well. This was shot last August. A little PP could improve it some. Other than some cropping and a minimum default sharpening in Picasa, there's none.

That'll get you where you want to go. Another post mentions the gap between 55 and 70mm with such a bundle. It's nice to have every mm covered but with a 12Mp camera isn't really critical. If you find your kit 18-55 lens isn't enough or your longer 70-300 zoom isn't wide enough AND you cannot take 2 steps forward or 2 steps Back, worry about it then. Right now let's just get you shooting so we can see what the UK looks like from your point of view. You can spend weeks and even months agonizing over this and in the meantime, miss a lot of great photo ops (not to mention the learning curve you are likely to experience).

Good price for the camera, don't think you'll get it cheaper unless you happen to be visiting the US or Asia soon! Go for it.

You can sell that lens for at least 80 on Ebay if you get fed up with it, so there's very little to lose.

I'd snap its arse off if I didn't already have a K-x... Love the red K-r too!

Audiobomber - The L-series 55-300mm Hasn't been available here as a kit-lens, or as retail sale. My regular shop (3 cameras and a lot of accessories-etc, over the last 3 years) - says its a North America "Special Deal" only... So - interesting to see the UK is now getting it, too.

Perhaps Pentax doesn't allow it here, in order to keep the price of the ED 55-300mm at AUD$670.00 - when I get my K-R soon I'll a bit later try to get the ED version on this Forum - I've seen it for about half that, from high-reputation sellers.

Until then, I'll fiddle about with an as-new Sigma 100-300mm f/4.5-6.7 DL (well - you needed a laugh...!) Actually, it came in an auction-site bundle, with a Sigma 28-80mm f/3.5-5.8, as new, an unused-looking MZ-50 body, and an excellent padded 2-camera + lenses and many pockets bag - all for $60.00. So the lenses cost about $15.00 each. So I'm at least sure to get my money's-worth.....!

The kit-lens situation here is, er...., Weirdo!

So is the Pentax camera lineup, actually. There's actually a nice "wide array" of Pentax Entry-Level DSLRs available... Such as - all with Pentax kit 18-55mm:

K-M - $799.00
K-X - $659.00
K-R - $889.00

Probably the "best for money" option is the K-X with Sigma 17-70mm for $729.00 - $70.00 less than a K-M with kit 18-55mm.

That's actually the "walk-around" lens I want with my K-R - but so far the KR for kit/package lenses only has the kit 18-55mm and kit of Pentax 18-55mm + 50-200mm for a spooky $1,069....

The shop says they have to sell back-stock, so the older bodies have a lot more kit/package lens options. However, the Sigma 17-70mm might be offered later in the year.

Or I can buy body-only, and retail Sigma 17-70mm for $339.00.

They have the K-7, with 18-55mm WR for $1,259.00 - and the K-5 with 18-55mm WR for $1,829.00.

So, as for buying "modern" lenses new, here - I am indeed glad that Takumar/Asahi-Pentax made so many nice M42 lenses over previous decades that are now quite affordable... Along with some K-mounts that are better than the ones I already have.

A 1973 "unused" SMC Tak f/1.8 55mm, as a prime to get going with, and will be looking for an SMC Model 2 135mm - the 6-element one, so on... Should be fun and educational...

Dave.
