I don't know if I have a freak camera but I'm loving my battery life. Got the k-x in November and checked the shutter count about 2 weeks ago and it read 937. I'm well over 1000 shots while using the flash about 50% of the time and reviewing pics on the LCD quite a lot. Oh, this is all using the original lithium batteries that came with the k-x and updated firmware.
Totally with you! I still have the batteries that came with my camera too, been shooting daily since Christmas Day. No idea how many I have taken...how do I find that out? I have the old firmware though, yet to update.

Have you set the camera so it knows what type of batteries you're using? I've found that makes quite a difference.

we just got ours today, took about 25 pics, and put new AA Energizers and the camera is showing half/ and then goes to red. Sounds like Firmware update is important??? Not sure what this is? What's the best option here. I don't need a new camera with dead batteries...

go to Check shutter count online - My Shutter Count.com

you just have to upload the last pic you took with the camera and it will give you the shutter count.

I haven't had any battery problems since upgrading the firmware. I avoid Liveview though which i feel will suck them dry pretty quick.
