Battery life for K-x

It sounds like I am having the same problem as a few of you have. Battery life! The Lithiums that came with my new K-x only lasted for 40-50 shots. All I had to replace them were Alcaline, those seem to to from full to dead to half and back. If I turn off the camera for a minute it might go back to full charge but only last for 4-5 shots. Is it firmware or battery type? or both? thanks.

What firmware are you using? There was an update like a year ago that addressed a battery issue. Its hard to say where the problem lies until we know more.

Forget alkalines. Those won't work at all.

Buy a set of new Lithiums, the good ones, and take it from there.

I still have the batteries that came with mine and it still says they're fully charged. Sometimes the battery meter drops and turns orange but it goes green again when I turn the camera off and back on. I updated fw when I first got it but it still has a full meter after about 2 weeks. I've been playing with it every day.

I got eneloops too but haven't opened it up yet.

Haven't got my camera on me but I think you hold down the 'menu' button as you turn on the camera...

Do a search for 'K-x firmware update' here on pentaxforums... I imagine there is a walkthrough guide

I believe the firmware you want is version 1.01.10

the link for UK owners to download firmware from Pentax is http://www.pentax.co.uk/en/Photo_Downloads.html#MediaTypeID4

Hope this helps

Even with the new firmware, the K-x will indicate that your rechargeables are half-empty when in reality they are 70-80% charged. Just keep shooting until they die. I reliably get 300+ shots on a charge.

I don't know if I have a freak camera but I'm loving my battery life.

Got the k-x in November and checked the shutter count about 2 weeks ago and it read 937.

I'm well over 1000 shots while using the flash about 50% of the time and reviewing pics on the LCD quite a lot.

Oh, this is all using the original lithium batteries that came with the k-x and updated firmware.

Lithiums are awesome. Some photogs don't bother with rechargeables because lithiums are so good and reliable. I do both... NiMh around home but lithiums when I travel (to minimize weight).

I use 2300 ni-mh rechargeable for my K-X and I can leave my camera on all day, take some shots, do quick views and at the end of the day it would be at half. I got my camera in Dec 2010 and did firmware update.

I shot about 1600 shots with the lithiums that came with my k-x. As this is my first DSLR I played with it alot, tried live view and shot with and without flash. The second set of lithiums lasted for about 1300 shots (I shot also outside and it's pretty cold here in Finland, lithiums handle the freezing temperatures pretty well but it affects battery life). I have found energizer lithiums for as low as 7 euros per set of four. I think they are superior to any rechargable battery, especially their freezing "resistance".

With Sanyo Eneloops I usually take about 600+ pictures, about 30% with flash. I have 2x4 batteries and change then when dead. With the original sanyo eneloop charger, they are charged quickly, just about 3 hours. But it's always a good idea to have a reserve lithiums when you go abroad, where you can be unable to reach power point or there is no electricity. Alkalines won't last long, only about 100-200 shots.
