50-200mm Kit lens replacement suggestions?

I am wanting a longer lens but cant afford the DA 55-300mm. Are there any third party lens' that are on par or better image quality and that I could get for the price I could sell the kit lens for?

Have you looked at the DA L 55-300?

Nope, not better IQ. For the reach, however, you could get a Tamron or Sigma 70-300 used for maybe $100.

The cheapest lens that will have better IQ and longer reach is the DA L 55-300mm. There was one on the 'for sale' section here. The cheapest way to more reach is a teleconverter, but IQ will suffer with a cheap teleconverter and you will lose automation too. Sorry, can't think of anything in that price range that will do what you ask.

The DAL version is not that much cheaper and you'll have to buy a hood as well, but some show up in the marketplace from time to time.

Another possible option is the Pentax FA 100-300 4.7-5.8. It gets very good reviews here on this site, and looks like it costs about $75 to $100. I think it is only available used. I have not used this lens myself, but some reviews concur that it is a more affordable alternative to the 55-300. With this lens you do of course lose the 55-100 range, and with the aperture it is somewhat slower. Thanks. Glenn

The difference from the UK place I got my DA from (after some shopping around) was 20, and had I got the DA L I would then have had to get a lens hood.

The FA 80-320 is not better IQ or on par with the 55-300, but it gives decent images though .

Yes yes yes. I overpaid at US$120 on eBay a couple years ago but I have no regrets. I'm no birder but my best bird shots have been with this lens. The silver body looks great on my ZX-M, dorky on my K20D, but I don't mind dorkiness because of the performance. Probably the best AF zoom optics available in that focal+price range.

If you don't need AF nor quite that much reach, the classic manual-focus Vivitar Series 1 70-210/3.5 can still be had for under US$100 and REALLY can't be beat. And it is heavy enough to crush small dogs.

Another option is the Pentax FA J 75-300mm.
It is a fairly decent tele-zoom and offers a wider option than the Pentax FA 100-300mm.
