Canon lenses will NOT work on Pentax cameras for general photography without major surgery. Exception: With minor surgery, or a reversing ring, a Canon lens *could* be used for closeups/macros. But why bother? Many many other brands and types would work as well, or better.

Many brands of lenses are made with PK (Pentax K-bayonet) mounts, including Zeiss, Vivitar, Sigma, Tamron, Tokina. The PK mount is an evolution of the earlier M42 screwmount, of which MANY brands exist. M42 lenses can be used on a Pentax dSLR with just a simple adapter. Almost any PK or M42 lens could be used on a Canon SLR -- but it just doesn't work the other way around.

Some other lens types can be modified for use on a Pentax dSLR. Sometimes the modifications are cheap and simple, sometimes not. Olympus OM, Nikon NI, Contax/Yashica C/Y, are usually easy. Certain other lenses can be altered, but the cost is high. Basically, don't worry about such modifications -- "for Pentax" lenses abound.

It seems that the manual focus nikkor lenses (or at least some of them) fit

Canon will not work. At least not with more effort than it's worth.

NaCl(but there are enough lenses w/o Canon anyway)H2O

with respect to lens mounts and interchangability, you need to note 4 main points

first, each maker uses a different system regestry, i.e. the distance from the lens mount to the focusing plane (film or sensor), therefore even if you can force one lens onto another (or perhaps there is a "sloppy fit") you will have issues with infinity focus. This is especially true when the lens you are using is from a camera with a shorter system regestry than the camera you are forcing it onto.

Second, some camera models, and the canon AE-1 (and all canon FD lenses in general) use a breach lock mount where the bayonette or male part of the mount is on the body and the lens has the female part.

third, all makers use different locking arrangements so even if it can be forced on it wont usually lock

fourth, all makers use different diameter mounts and different number and size of bayonettes,

So, from above, the real interchangability is zero unless a maker has liscenced the lens mount system from one of the other makers, or shared development.

Pentax for example lisenced the K mount to Ricoh, Cosina, Vivitar, Sigma and others in the 1980's. However not all these ventures were successful, Sigma and pentax had a divergence with AF and Pentax and Ricoh had a divergence with AE modes, hence the famous ricoh pin.
