The flash isn't very likely to break. If anything happens, the camera's hot shoe is typically the weak point on the Pentax dSLRs. It was on the K10d / AF540 anyway. A few people, experienced a 2 or 3 foot drop test. The flash survived but it took the top of the camera body off.

Yea my 540 experienced a 4 foot drop. I had it mounted it on the stand it came with and I had it placed on a bed. I was stupid enough to lean on the bed and it crashed to the floor. It chipped a corner off the hot shoe on the flash but other than that, it held up great. So if anything, it is tough.

I have a Metz-48 bought second hand and I love it to bits. I haven't been in a situation yet where it hasn't provided enough light and I also haven't had any issues triggering it wirelessly (touch wood).

It's a bit on the heavy side but feels strong. There are plenty of good flashes out there but you wouldn't be disappointed by the Metz-48 for its price.
