K-x debug mode w/pics please

Subject already posted in a few threads but..
can someone please go thru the procedure to
access the K-x debug menu with a few "print screen"
how-to pictures.
Especialy how to write the files/put on SD card.

Up to now I've found :
1) make text file in root folder of SD card
2) name it MODSET.492
3) type in text file named: [OPEN_DEBUG_MENU]

please explain the following:
  • "line must end with CR/LF (endline char in windows) "

some posts also mention : [DEBUG_MODE EN] ?
insert SD card in camera but leave card door open?
power up while holding MENU or Av/+/- button ?
etc etc.

Not too familiar with computer lingo, (also english is not
my native language), so a few step by step how-to pics would help a lot!
Thanks!

Michel

Hi camo, I've found that explanation before but,

it's this step I'd like some details (pics)
of what it 'should' look like on my computer screen

1) create file MODSET.492 with
[OPEN_DEBUG_MENU]

and I have no idea what this means:
  • line must end with CR/LF (endline char in windows)

"line must end with CR/LF (endline char in windows)" means what it means.

If you have Linux or Mac OS X, you have "\n" (LF) line ending.

See Newline - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

With the help of a collegue (a diehard Canon guy, but he's ok..!)
we figured out what I was doing wrong.

I was creating the file using 'Text Document' but I guess it's not the equivalent
to 'Notepad' (not available on my PC) He simply sent me the file via e-mail and I loaded it on my SD card.
Voilą access to the debug mode, already fixed my back focus issue in less than 5 minutes!

Adjustments done with my usual lens, a Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 EX DC MACRO, all pics are now RAZOR sharp!

FYI for you computer dudes, I'm running Windows 7 Pro and if I try to open that file
(Notepad) it doesn't reconize it and ask if I want to try another program.

Thank you all for you input.

Michel

Yea that's due to the file extension being changed to .492.

Just out of interest what test did you do for the focus? What did you take photos of to discover if it has back/front focus?

I printed up a test chart from here (chart #2 'normal lens'):
PENTAX DSLRs: PART-1. Free Autofocus Adjustment charts for front and back focusing problems. Good for Pentax, Canon and Nikon.

According to this test my focus was ok before, 'centered on the chart with a slight back focus' but my pics didn't look right to me lately.
(reading Pentax Forums a lot tends to makes you look for all sorts of problems with your gear..)
I found that adjusted to 'centered with a very slight front focus' now gives me much better results for my type of photography.

I mostly use that lens in the 18mm to 30mm range so I also fined tune the adjustments at 20mm
and not the usual maximum focal length of the zoom @50mm (did notice a small difference required between ideal the 20mm and 50mm settings).

For now, test and chart pics look great, after a few 'real' pics I'll determine if further fine tuning is required.

cool, cheers. Looks better than a flat chart as it folds out to 45
