K7, F-- error Vivitar lens

i have a new K7 and an old vivitar non Auto lens.
no matter what mode i use it in i get the F-- error..
it worked perfectly on all my other Pentax cameras.
i noticed it worked on new lower Pentax but can't figure it out for the K7.
is there and answer please? does an adapter work?
