P-TTL does not work correctly with K-5 and Metz 54MZ-4i

I recently purchased Metz 54MZ-4i Digital and SCA 3702 M3 for my PENTAX cameras.
I set the flash mode to TTL to use P-TTL mode.
It works just fine with K-x.
But it does not seem to me that it does not work correctly with K-5 since the picture I took was extremely over exposure.
I took the pictures using P mode on both K-x and K-5.
I wonder if this issue happens on my own K-5 only.

Can anyone here use Metz 54MZ-4i Digital with K-5 in P-TTL mode without any problem?

I vaguely remember reading somewhere that Pentax was working with Metz to fix a problem with K5's and the Metz flash. Maybe try doing a google search for your issue?

Try PM'ing MattDM. he's the local flash expert on the Forum.

I don't have the flash nor the camera body in question....

I suspect the flash is not in p-TTL mode.

Try this: put the flash and the camera in p-TTL mode, put the camera in 2 second delay mode. Hit the shutter release. You should see:

1. A weak strobe (preflash) from the flash.
2. The mirror being lifted.
3. 2 second delay
4. The shutter opening, and a strobe (main flash) from the flash, then the shutter closing.

If you don't see (1), it's not p-TTL mode.

Please post back.

Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately I could not find any issue relative to Metz 54MZ and K-5 using Google.
But I could find the chart placed on the following link:
http://www.beco.is/lisalib/getfile.aspx?itemid=6137

According to this chart, 54MZ-4i with SC3702 M3 supports PENTAX K-5.
So my K-5 itself might be something wrong.

Thank you for your advice.
I tried using 2-second delay with 54MZ-4i, and I could see preflash just after I hit the shutter release.
So I think that P-TTL is activated.

I doubt very much that Metz would support PTTL, may be TTL but that is different.

I'm curious....

Care to elaborate?

According to Metz on their website, the 54MZ-4i with appropriate module does support Pentax p-TTL.

I was actually going to say the same thing and in fact Did. Then I went and looked at the Metz site and Pentax P-TTL is in fact listed (at which point I deleted my post). However if you look at the manual for the flash, it doesn't appear to mention P-TTL at all (though I didn't read every word in the manual). Confusing because, my 58 AF-1 manual does specifically discuss P-TTL and in fact, it is an option on the menu (mode) when mounted on the camera. When the flash is Off of the camera, P-TTL is not in the menu system of the flash.

Does Metz 54MZ-4i support p-TTL?

According to these articles, with SCA 3702-M2, it does (note that Matt's articles say "No p-TTL Wireless," not "No p-TTL."):

- The Definitive Guide Metz P-TTL Flash Models.

- The Definitive Guide Metz P-TTL Flash Models Metz Mecablitz 54 MZ-4i Digital.

- Mecablitz 54 MZ-4i Digital - Product Information.

- Pentax K10D & Metz 54MZ-4i compatability? (particularly last post in the thread).

My guess is that the Metz 54MZ-4i manual does not mention Pentax p-TTL because at the time of print, module SCA 3702-M2 didn't exist.

I'll take your word for it. I was just pointing out what I saw at the Metz website.

Thank you for your reply. I have confirmed with Metz Technical Support that Metz 54MZ-4i Digital with SCA 3702 M3 Adapter supports P-TTL and PENTAX K-5.

Thank you for your reply. About P-TTL, it is described in the manual of SCA 3702 Adapter. If we set the flash mode to TTL, P-TTL is enabled.
