Hello,

I am anticipating on getting the Pentax K-X (white) with kit lens 18-55 & 50-200 on Tuesday!

I have been eyeballing this camera for awhile now and after much research and debating, I finally ordered it. My prior camera was a Sony Cybershot DSC-H10 but after playing with my in-laws Canon T2i, I decided to make the switch.

I have the Sanyo Eneloop batteries, Transcend 8gb and Lowepro Passport Sling bag on order.. Am I leaving anything out that is a must have?

Here are a few of my favorite shots I took with the prior P&S..

Welcome

The K-x kit lens do not come with hoods. These are a must IMHO.

P.S. nice photos!

I think you have everything you need to start with but as you will come to find (as did I) you will want more lenses and accessories even if you don't need them.

What brand should I be looking at for the filters? What kind of hood (plastic, rubber)?

Also, what about the camera strap? I have read that Op/Tech is a good one but what about Quantaray?

Thanks in advance!

Strap should come with the camera... The one that came with mine is fine...

I use Hoya UV's and a Hoya polorizer... very 'mid-price'... They're not cheap but not extortionate either... Make sure whatever you get is coated and you should be ok...

Not sure if you realise this, but a polariser is a special purpose filter, it is not to be left on the lens all the time as a protective measure.

Buy the bayonet plastic hoods off ebay (search for pentax and 18-55 or 55-300), not the rubber ones.

Momallica - as you've indicated on you original post one of your lenses is a 50-200 which would be the DAL kit version. I believe they use a 52mm hood as opposed to a 58mm hood for the 55-300.

To make it a bit more confusing, the DA 50-200 WR is a 49mm thread/hood.

As noted, get the plastic bayonet mounts.

Cheers..

I'd suggest adding some additional storage. You'll probably want to use raw with your Pentax, which uses up a lot more space per picture than the typical p&s jpegs. You're getting one 8gb card, but depending on how you use your camera, you might want some additional cards. Certainly have at least one extra set of batteries and one extra card at all time, just in case.

Also make sure you have plenty of space on your computer for all those raw images, and a backup plan in place.

Another Pentax newbie

Hello everyone,
I too just purchased a Pentax K-X on a complete whim. Now I'm sitting here and wondering what to do next. Any suggestions? Should I just go out and start taking pictures? Any advice on how I go about learning photography? I've never really been one to sit down at a desk and listen to a lecture. Thanks for your replies... hopefully soon I'll be able to contribute.
