Pentax K1000 film won't advance

Hello,

I've just bought an old Pentax K1000 and have tried loading the film, following the instructions in the manual. I've loaded the film in the cassette chamber and pulled it over to the take-up spool, but can't advance the film using the rapid wind lever. Without the film inserted, if I pull the rapid wind lever the take-up spool just moves very slightly anti-clockwise and the lever does not return to its original position - it has to be pushed back.

I'm presuming therefore it is not working, and wondered if anyone had a fix they could suggest?

The obvious question, Did you try firing the shutter before winding?
