another lens ?

total beginner. Got m k-x, took a class to learn more about photography, but I'm lost as to what lens to get. Would like a telephoto/zoom for some closeups. Trip to the Med would be ideal with a new lens. Don't you think?? Not looking for cracker jack things, but low price won't hurt. thanks guys!!

What lenses do you have now and what can't you do with them? I think you need to answer that question first.. What is Med?

The Pentax 55-300, which does not focus very closely, and a close-up filter or two for it.

for cheap and average... you can try the Sigma 70-300 DL w/macro....
for good and cheap, the Pentax FA 100-300 f4.7(silver not black)
for good but a bit more (and better brand new), the Pentax DA 55-300 as SpecialK mentioned

For a minimal solution, a DA or Tamron 18-250, with a Raynox DCR-150 or -250 for real close work. I don't much use a 50-300-vicinity zoom because so much is left out, and I shoot a lot between 35-70, so that means swapping lenses too much. Ugh.

If all you want is reach, I'll echo the recommendation of an FA100-300 (silver not black). Splendid lens. I've also a Lil'Bigma 170-500 but the FA100-300 sees much more use. If by "Trip to the Med" you mean you're going on a tour of Spain, Provence, Italy, Dalmatia, Greece, etc, then the 18-250 is really the best single choice. Throw in a Fast Fifty for low-light shots, and you're set. Have fun!

Listen to the man; he has around 200 lenses so he knows everything about swapping them

another lens ?

You're asking the wrong crowd. If the question is "another lens?", the answer is always "yes, and another and another...."
