New K-R owner, question about lens hoods

Hi,

I just bought a K-R kit with 18-55 and 55-200 lenses. The kit didn't include lens hoods. Since both lenses have a 52 mm thread can I use the same hood on both of them? Also, is there a brand of lens hood you recommend? Thanks in advance!

Jason

Ideally you should have a different hood for each matched to the field of view at the shortest focal length. The ones attaching to the bayonet on the lens body are nice in that they can be stored on the lens in reversed orientation which conserves space in a camera bag . There would seem to be replicas of these available much cheaper than the original on Ebay at lest (the one I have for the DAL 55-300 from a Chinese Ebay seller is does the job and even has a hatch for manipulating a filter )

[edit: longest [focal length] -> shortest (oops )]

bikedc: I recently purchased for mine from this user on eBay. I payed some 17usd incl. shipping and it took 4-6 weeks for them to arrive.

Direct links:
18-55mm 52mm hood
50-200mm 52mm Hood

They seem OK - only thing I'd point my finger at would be the removable thingies. I'm not entirely sure why they are there, but the one on the 50-200mm hood is too loose so there is a risk of it to fall off. I'm planning on solving the problem by gluing them

No, they are distinctly different.

Part Numbers reqd:

1. Lens Hood for Pentax 18-55mm PH-RBA 52mm II 18-55
(Example)
eBay Seller: ecdepot: Pentax 18-55 lens hood, Cameras items on eBay Australia

2. Lens Hood for Pentax SMC DA 50-200mm PH-RBB 52MM
(Example)
Lens Hood for Pentax SMC DA 50-200mm PH-RBB 52MM Camera (eBay item 120671170392 end time 13-Apr-11 07:30:40 AEST) : Cameras

*Important* Do not buy part nbr. PH-RBD for your 50-200 because that one is for the WR version lens which has a 49mm filter thread.

Aren't the kit lenses for K-r the same as for K-x? Mine interchange perfectly fine. Just tried it

Yes you're correct in saying that both cameras use the same kit lenses, and that both being 52mm filter head the hoods will interchange (I presume), but it's the 2 lenses under discussion here that are significantly different to each other.
Problem is if they do interchange, then it's a potential trap for the (unsuspecting) user. Pentax really should design so that they won't fit on another lens that is unsuitable to the hood's size and shape.

Please read the prior post by jolepp, and I suggest that you interpret the word "longest" in his first paragraph to be "shortest", or "widest".

The crux of the issue is called vignetting.
Ref: Vignetting - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In this instance, the 18-55 is a wide-to-normal view zoom lens therefore it requires extra view clearance unobstructed by a lens hood, to cater for its wider field of view capability. Zoomed down to 18mm that is 76° wide, v's a much narrower 29° when zoomed right up to 55mm.
Therefore it uses a petal shaped hood (PH-RBA type) so the cutouts don't interfere.

Conversely, the 50-200 is a normal-to-telephoto range lens which at its widest only has 31.5° minimum width of view at 50mm (down to 8.1° at its max 200mm), so it can get away with a hood that shrouds the front glass elements a lot more.
With that fairly narrow 31.5° at its widest zoom point of 50mm, the hood for it doesn't need cutouts. And the PH-RBB type can be designed to give that bit more shielding against unwanted stray light. But if you put that same RBB hood on the 18-55 it would surely vignette the wide[r] view.

Hope that makes sense.

.R. -- Vignette, the black hole in reverse.

Ah, I see. I was simply replying to whether or not they would interchange. But you are correct regarding vignetting. I thought about mentioning it myself but left it out.

This may be a rabbit trail, but what exactly are those pop-out thingies there for?

Oh my gracious, no way! I will be popping my "thingie" out now. That will be so much easier than risking fingerprints reaching under the hood to adjust my circularizing polarizing filter. (doh!)
