I agree, the manual is less than to be desired. It seems as if Pentax seemed to the think the only people who buy the k-5 were those upgrading from another one of their DSLRs. Luckily there is PF, where us newbies can learn from the seasoned veterans.

Just got my new K 5 in yesterday...a big jump from my old 35 SLR. Did take some nice pictures with it today but I do need some help.....I do not understand what " Capture Mode " is or how I put myself in capture mode to go to my set-ups.Pentax just takes it for granted that you should know what it is when you buy such a good camera I guess. Pretty much the same goes for " Playback mode " ( if you've got the time )!!

Thank you Snostorm !! I defy anyone to try to find where it states in the manual where the capture mode...playback...setup ...and custom modes are to be found !!!! Now I think I get it.Thanks again Scott !
I took the challenge to see how far I could get Should be taking photos but my wife is sick in bed so can't go out

Capture mode
Looked in the index; not found
Paged through the table of contents; got it, page 20

Functions of buttons, dials and levers used during shooting are noted
Conclusion: capture mode is normal shooting mode

Playback mode
Looked in index; not found
Paged through the table of contents; got it, page 22

Those two were the ones from the opening post

Custom mode
Found that one using the electronic copy of the manual, else I would not have found it as it's in an illustration and easily overlooked A note here is that custom settings is something else and could be found in the index

Setup mode
There is not such a thing; any search will fail. But there is a setup menu Searching for that will also not reveal anything as it's actually spelled 'set-up' in the manual. I assume that in this case you were actually looking for the setup menu and a search for 'menu' in the index and a bit of reading would have taken you to page 44 of the manual and you could have taken it from there

Not too bad, I think. But it shows that the index could indeed be more complete (it's the first place where I usually look).

Advice: get an electronic copy of the manual; easier to search although you would not have found the correct 'setup' as it's spelled 'set-up'
