Also, I doubt that Pentax will agree to repair anything if they believe the repair cost will exceed the value of the camera or lens. We never did that when I worked for Minolta (unless the customer was crazy and really insisted).

Try taking a photo with a San Disk Extreme III card. Some times vertical lines are due to a bad card.
Next try Pixel Mapping. After this take a test shot.
If these fail then it is obviously a Sensor or Motherboard problem.
