Did I go insane or is this reasonable?

I was just wondering... Did i go insane yesterday?

I had an opportunity to shoot my ski/snowboarding club's rail jam yesterday starting at 6am - 430pm. I took my k-7 along and I had a couple of new toys to try out. (Battery grip, flash, etc) I wound up taking 631 photos. I have never shot an event like that, but it seems like a stupidly high number of shots.

If I was to do this over again should I limit my shots thus making me think more about composition and exposure settings and getting the good shots?

I also found a huge hole in my lenses. 18-50 kit lenses are terrible to work with but, none-the-less It was my work horse for the day.

631 pics in 10.5 hrs? approx 60 pics per hr, or one per minute.

Doesn't sound high to me, especially for an action sequence shoot.

Thats not that much. When I shoot sports, I'll shot ~400 in ~30 minutes. So I'd say that you're doing just fine!

more you shoot, the more you learn,.,.,.,. but you also learn which ones to delete and which ones to keep on your camera
my wife and I shot close to 2,000 photos on our trip and that doesn't count the ones I deleted on the trip.

cheers and shoot away!

Hmm I guess drive mode does spit out a few fps on the k-7. I Also got a chance to shoot with a canon kiss X4 (550d).. not a bad camera IQ wise but I never realised how solid the k-7 was! the canon was very light and plasticy, disconcerting when its not your camera. Also, I didn't like the hold a button and scroll to change aperture. (not to mention the lack of aperture & shutter priority mode)

Well to be honest I have been shooting mainly with my FA77 followed by my 70-200 and had plenty of space with what I was shooting. I haven't shot much wide angle. My shopping list has now be re-arranged: Da 15 Ltd is now on top. The DAF 100 WR macro is gonna have to wait

I shot over 175 photos in two hours recently during a speedskating event. You didn't go insane.

No, not much at all. Are you complaining abou the PP work for these shoots? or the cost of print all these to paper? You have a DSLR right?

600 is the number of a less-than-two-hours-event in average: 20 persons, single/pair/groups/candid fill easily 600 shots in relatively short time.

But 600 shoots of the same same thing, may be a different story ;-)

That is a little bit insane.......

Narr not complaining at all about either of the above. I actually like it as something to help relax. I have just never shot anything more than probably 100 shots in 1 day.

If it's insane to take 631 photos in 10.5 hours, then I have gone far beyond insanity. Last August I attended Redskins training camp and took 428 photos in 2 hours 40 minutes. In September I attended the Thunder over the Blue Ridge Airshow and took 837 photos in 4 hours 10 minutes.

I was going to say insane, but then I checked. I've taken 400 in 4 hours, about two-thirds with manual-focus primes, one shot at a time. It was a wedding so I also ate a meal, had a few beers, etc. I even liked about a hundred of them.

I've taken around 300 photos in about 2 hours of a high school football game so 2x the photos in 5x the time is not insane. Action photos obviously require a higher # of photos per shoot.

If you have no problem sorting and editing that amount of images... I don't see how it hurts anyone. Your only concern will be once you have seen the final images and decide if there is a need for improvement.
