Relections in picture, from the sun or Moon

I am getting reflection in to my picture when taking moon or sun photos, this is a new 55-300mm Pentax lenses, is this lenses defective? I attached several sunrise photos, the moon pictures were worse.

Have you got a UV filter on it? If so, try it without it.

Lens flare, or as inferred above, possibly flare from a filter?

Looking directly at the sun or any bright object is almost always going to give some flare.
Results may vary on the lens and any filter(s) you have in front of it.

Agree - I have been shooting the moon for more than 30 years and would definitely deem this to be lens flare. I have found that essentially all zoom-lenses consistently produce more lens flare than do primes - simply because there are more glass-air interfaces in a zoom to reflect the light.

(Qulity) primes are much more "immune" to this type of flare, but one may often provoke it given the right angle of incident light and a sufficiently long exposure time.

Here is an example with a Tamron SP 300 mm f/5.6 lens (Adaptall-2 system, Model 54B). The first image was exposed for 1.6 seconds the next, taken a few minutes later, was exposed for 5 seconds:

Pentax K200D + Tamron Model 54B: 1.6 seconds @ f/6.3 - ISO 320

Pentax K200D + Tamron Model 54B: 5 seconds @ f/7.1 - ISO 320

I think that second moon shot is crazy slick. I have to experiment with that next time I actually See the moon.

on a side note, I hope your not looking threw the viewfinder while taking those pictures of the sun. One of the few times LV is handy or trial and error look at results.

Are you certain you are not on Tatooine?
