When I've dismantled and cleaned lens helicoids I've reassembled them with Vaseline, varying the coating to give the feel I liked. I've never had an adverse reaction in our climate but think it might be a problem in the tropics!

I'm going to have to give this a go with another M lens - I've got a 200mm lens with lovely clear front element . . . . but it gets a little fuzzy further in - all hints and tips greatfully received

I know I'm a bit farther South, but I don't think I need to worry about tropical weather causing problems. BUT - I'm not likely to open up my slack 28-80 as the glass elements are in a lovely, clean condition.

The SMC Pentax-M 200mm f4? If so, I think everything in front of the focus ring unscrews. It has been a while since I've had this lens, but try focusing to the minimum distance. Slide out the hood. Grab the focus ring in one hand and the protruding barrel that moved when you focused) in the other. Unscrew in the same direction that you would dismount the lens from a camera. You should end up with the first three elements on one hand, and the aperturre, other three elements and lens mount in the other. Be careful not to hold the front part only by the hood. If you're lucky, one of those glass surfaces you've just exposed has the fuzzies.

Thanks for the guide Dave.

I'll have to take a few 'brave' pills before having a go though
