uploading trouble- most likely Card

recently came back from 6 months overseas and was trying to upload my photos from the camera to the computer. I uploaded about 1430 successfully (approx 4GB) then my computer told me that i had to skip the rest. I assume this was because the folder I was uploading to became full.

I unplugged my camera, went through all these photos etc. then plugged it back in to try and get the rest of the photos. However, when I plugged my camera in, my computer simply recognized a storage device with no information on it, therefore not recognizing any of the photos (but I can look at all the photos on the camera itself, so I know they're still there). I tried inserting my card into a Nikon and the Nikon read "card error."

Im wondering if I maybe disconnected the camera improperly and somehow messed up the card or the camera, and if this is the case, if I can reprogram the card without losing the 1300+ photos that I have yet to recover.

Any help is appreciated,
Cheers, Dylan

Hi Dylan and welcome to the forums. First of all I'd invest in a cheap SD card reader. It's quicker and doesn't deplete the camera's batteries, just pop out the card from the camera and into the reader and off you go. As to the possibility of lost pics, I'd check and see if you can see them in the camera, if the camera can find them they are definitely there. In addition there are a bunch of card recovery utilities out there, I'd do a google search on SD card recovery. What ever happens do get a usb card reader, they are faster, more reliable and don't waste your camera's batteries.

I never connect my camera to a computer directly, I always use a card reader. You might try first flipping the write protect switch on the card, and then try to read it in a card reader. I always try to write-protect the card when I take it out of the camera. If there actually is an issue with the filesystem on the card, you can use any number of free software tools to try to repair the filesystem and recover data. However it's pretty unlikely that there is filesystem damage if the camera can still read all the images on the card.

I gather that from time to time people who take the card out of the camera for downloading forget to put it back in again!

Personally I use the USB cable, but if i thought I had a problem with a card then I might use the card reader.
