X-mode ...?

I've been suggested by a friend to use this mode so I could get my flash (Sigma EF430ST) to lessen misfiring... Prob is, I don't know if the K-x has it.. X mode.. I've only heard of it on higher models...

so anyway, what is "x mode" really? What does it do? sorry for the noob question...

X refers to the shortest shutterspeed at which both curtains of the shutter are open. On current Pentax cameras it is 1/180 sec.

Not sure if the camera has the mode; you can 'simulate' by selecting M on the mode dial and setting the shutter speed to 1/180s

It's not much of a revolutionary setting, really.
If you're shooting in P-TTL mode, Av mode is sufficient to shoot with.

Thank you for that really simple explanation. Although I've been around cameras for years and consider myself an advanced amateur (and pro when I get paid for photography once in a while), your explanation is the one that will now stick in my mind.

There's no X-mode available on the K-x. M-mode is not a true substitute because you lose auto exposure. Tv mode at 1/180s would be somewhat equivalent, but you lose control of aperture.

Alizarine, if you want more consistent flash expousure, use whatever mode you like, but stop using auto ISO. Try it, it works.
