K10D Firmware Update

I am trying to update the firmware from 1.00 to 1.31 on my Pentax K10D DSLR and am having trouble getting it to update on the camera. I downloaded the file from Pentax, unzipped the file and copied the .bin file to a freshly formatted SD card using my computers card reader. I then placed the SD card back into my camera and while holding the menu button, turn the camera back on. On the LCD screen the version shows up and then is replaced by Auto Picture Program. Nothing comes up to indicate that the file is being downloaded. What am I doing wrong. I have read other posts on the subject, and nothing seems to be working. Please help.

My only guess would be to go back to the website and download the package again, just in case you managed to download a garbled copy.

First, welcome to the forum!

Make sure the file is in the 'root' directory on the SD card - not in any directory or sub-directory.

Also make sure you downloaded the firmware for the K10d and not the K100d or something like that.

Just to make sure.........is it an SD card, or SDHC? From what I can tell from the user manual, the max capacity for firmware 1.00 was 4GB. If the updated firmware gives use of SDHC cards, you'll need to use an SD card for the update.

It is an SD card. What is the difference between and SD and SDHC? My camera won't take anything hire than a 2GB card.

Thanks, I made sure before I pulled the SD card from the PC card reader that it was the only file on the card. There are no other files or folders.

SDHC = SD High Capacity. The reason for going to 1.31 instead of 1.30 is so you can use them. If you don't have one, then you don't need the firmware.

1.10 turns on all kinds of options not originally shipped.
1.20 turns on Remote Assistant.
1.30 turns on SDM for the DA* lenses (and I would assume HSM like Sigma lenses).

If you are at any one of those and can do everything you want, there is no need to update.

Not true. The K10D accepted SDHC cards from its original release and firmware version 1.0. It was the K100D that needed a firmware update to accept SDHC cards.

Version 1.31 was released to fix a minor problem that occured with certain brands of SDHC cards.

JODIKAY, are you sure you have a K10D and not a K100D? I don't mean to be insulting, but, as I said, the K10D always accepted cards greater than 2GB. It was the K100D, not the K10D, that needed a firmware update to use 4GB and up.

If you have a K100D, it will not even try to load firmware for a K10D, which is a good thing, as otherwise, you would have a very expensive paperweight.

For the K100D, firmware version 1.01 added SDHC support and 1.02 improved it. Make sure that you don't download the firmware for the K100D Super. It and the K100D are two different, but very similar cameras. The firmware is not interchangeable.

I guess I stand corrected. I thought that big round of software releases, which 1.31 (K10d) was part of, was to allow the camera to use greater than a given amount sized card. I never used more than a 2Gb in my K10d.
