K7 on Manual

I like to shot in manual mode with my K7 and DA*60-250.

After taking a reading with the green button I find the following condition.

- I can change the f-stop no problem...moving through small increments - f4 to f4.5 to f5 etc.

- When I change the shutter speed it jumps - say 250 - 500 - 4000.

- When it jumps to 4000 or 8000 I cannot lower it.

Help?

Dave

what ISO are you setting? and what aperture?

It may be that the combination of ISO and aperture is needing more than maximum shutter speed.

also how is the green button option set up, aperture or shutter speed preferred?

Are you by any chance hitting the AE-L button (you'll see an asterisk in the viewfinder)? There ar no Auto settings of any sort in M mode otherwise. IF you are holding down the Shutter button (half) while turning a dial, it behaves as if the exposure is locked.

If not...
Try swapping the dials. That is, if your dials are set for aperture on rear and shutter speed on front, reverse them (Custom menu 4 #26, Page 106). See if the behavior follows the dial or if you now see the same thing with the Aperture rather than the shutter speed.

Thanks guys...

Lowell: ISO is set @ 400. I'm usually shooting birds so I set speed at 1000 (if I can) then change f from 4-7. Green is set on Program.

Jeff: I'm not hitting the AE-L. I tried swapping dials and the condition still exists on the front dial. Now the f jumps and locks at the highest setting.

Forgot to mention one problem: when the dial jumps to 8000/s it locks at the setting and I have to use the green button again.

Thanks

Dave

Then it's the dial. This seems a recurring problem with the K7 (and may happen with the K5 since it's the same body, basically)... There are a few threads around here about it. I think some give it a shot of contact cleaner to cure it. Do a search and it may come up.

The Green button just centers the meter and does so with a priority given either to shutter speed or aperture, depending on how you have the camera set.

I seem to recall something like this on my K7 with my Tammy 28-75 for some reason the camera always went for wide open highest shutter speed possible.

It has not done this for about 18 months now, so I forget what the cause was.

other than it has stopped doing it, no.

what firmware version is loaded in your camera? you find out by holding th emenu button down when powering on. It could be a bug that is fixed with software in the past.

you can also look on pentax's site to see the software releases and what they did.
