FA 50mm f1.4 not engaging in "A" setting

Today I received this lens used (EX) from keh, and quickly sliced open the box to get to the goods. I carefully unpacked the lens, slipped the aperture ring into the "A" setting like I have been doing all along with my smc-a style lenses. To my dismay, when the K-x is turned on, the camera does not request a focal length for shake reduction, and has a three dash symbol (---) meaning the lens isn't syncing up with the body. I gently switched it back and forth between "A"and f22, and it actually linked up once. But not each and every single time like it should.

-The camera is set up for smc-a style lens, setting 2 on the aperture ring menu.

-Upon closer inspection, I noticed that when I click between settings on the aperture dial, no contact pin emerges or recesses like I can visibly see on the smc-a style lens.

I have scoured the forum archives, and google, for the past hour and only found similar instances of my sort in a person who had dropped their lens. I am skeptical that keh would have shipped a faulty lens, and wonder if perhaps the delivery service had something to do with it.

If you can give me any information or suggestions I would appreciate it, although I realize I will likely end up having to pay return shipping costs , and probably end up getting the smc-a 50 f1.4 version like I knew I should have lol. Or if I get it to engage again after many tries, should i just never touch it again and continue on with life?

Welcome to the forum
An A lens should have not problems being recognised by a Pentax dSLR when on the A setting on the lens, regardless of the aperture ring menu setting. Are you certain that your lens's aperture ring is secured in the A setting? Are you depressing the button beside the A on the ring whilst you're turning the ring towards the A click? If not, that will be your problem.

Could this be just a bad electrical contact? Clean lens contact and lightly "exercise" the aperture ring. It "linked up" once sounds like "electrical" problem.

Thanks for the greetings, I have been surfing the forum for months since I got my pentax 35mm, but I have just been educating myself, and haven't found a need to post until now .

I have been fully depressing the Manual/Auto lock button when I switch from 22 to "A", its just only 1 out of 20 times does it actually recognize the lens. I just got it to recognize it for the second time and I am just not gonna switch it to manual aperture again.

I know I have been doing everything correctly though, as all I have ever used on the K-x is A-style manual focus lenses. So I was just trying to see if these lenses were notorious for this, and if I should have maybe invested my funds in a different more reliable lens.

Thanks for the quick reply once again!

Try cleaning the contacts and if it still does not work then probably you might just want to return the lens

Just a note - the camera won't prompt you for focal length with an FA lens mounted; it already knows the focal length.

I figured that when I got to editing pictures earlier it was recording the focal length in the image properties, looking forward to putting this glass to good use tomorrow!
