What is boils down to: If you want some point in focus, focus on THAT POINT. You can do this with any MFL or AFL (manual or autofocus lens). If you want a RANGE of points in focus, either stop 'way down, or use a MFL with a DOF chart inscribed on it. As mentioned, DOF has no sharp cut-off points, so practice practice practice until you can reliably get the effects you want.
