The way to calibrate a monitor is to buy one of the hardware devices mentioned in this thread and then follow the instructions that come with it. There is are no software-only solutions that are worth the "nothing" they might cost.

Let me add to that to check your monitor first to make sure it can be calibrated. Not all can and it would be a waste of money to buy a device to calibrate it if it can't be calibrated.

??? I'm not away of anything anyone could possibly do to a monitor that would prevent a calibration systems from being able to build a color profile for it.

I second Marc's awareness. The calibration is not a physical (lnobs or sliders) calibration but happens within the OS to adjust the RGB values displayed by the monitor. There may be some "canned" profiles vailable for a monitor, but they are not very good and you have to search for them, maybe on the monitor manufacturer's web site.
