At the risk of stating the obvious, the 'curtain' sounds to me as if it's the shutter, stuck down. As to what to do about it, I'm afraid I do not know.

Yep, sounds like a stuck shutter. Recommend only 1 course of action. Send in for repair.

There is one thing you could try, before you send it in for service. Its a long-shot, but who knows? It might work.

First, find the menu option that says something like "Reset to factory settings".

Then, remove the batteries and let the camera sit overnight.

Re-insert the batteries and try again.

I have no knowledge that this will work, but it costs nothing, doesn't take very long (certainly less than sending for service) and since a modern dslr is basically a computer with a lens, it might work. Its a variation on the old Windows "power off/power on" trick that often works with PC's.

Good luck.

Also try a firmware flash, that has been known to correct some strange problems.

I'd be cautious about sending for repair, since estimates alone can cost a lot (especially considering shipping), take a long time, and repairs can easily reach the cost of a replacement camera. You might just try the suggestions earlier and then give up if they don't work.

try taking a shot with the built in timer... this automatically lifts the mirror and might bring it down automatically if the mirror is the problem
good luck
