Positioning is really important in indoor basketball in particular in my experience. You can get close shots sitting at the end of the court when the kids are shooting and blocking but focus is an issue as they are coming closer and moving further away most of the time. Sitting on the sidelines of the court allow you more use of panning and you have less dramatic changes in distance from the camera but closeups are less likely to be dramatic and interesting in my experience. Good luck, I really want to hear about your experience shooting the f2.8 telezoom.

ok, took some of my 1st basketball pics yesterday and was actually surprised there was some pretty good shots. I shot in Av mode at 6400 and F2.8 but I did notice shutter speed kind of slow at 1/250-1/500. Should I try 12800 or do you think I'll have too much noise? I'd like to increase my shutter speed a tad.

Glad to hear you got some good shots! The downside of f2.8 is thinner DoF but the upside is faster shutter - were the not too good ones sort of less focused? Noise shouldn't be too big an issue at 6400 but if you were at f2.8 and getting 1/250-500 then the only way to go with a faster shutter would be to increase ISO and risk more noise.

yup, had some out of focus. Probably me, not the camera. haha When increasing the ISO, I can only go from 6400 to 12800? Is there a way to adjust the ISO somewhere in between while still shooting in Av mode?

Not that I know of, I believe that the ISO is in set increments. You've already expanded the range of the ISO in the menu so you an go from 100 to 12800 but I believe that you still can only work in the increments pre-set.

Were you using center point focus? I find that the AF when set on 11 or 5 points misjudges the focal point far too often for my taste and so have mine set to center point (not weighted) as the default.

Use the menu, go to Custom 1, option 2 and set "Sensitivity Steps" to 2.
My ISO goes from (100) 200 250 320 400 500 640 800 1000 1250 1600 2000 2500 3200 4000 5000 6400 8000 10000 12800
