Warning Flashes in K-5 / K-7 displays

Hello everyone,

I just bought a K-5 which i think is an really fine camera and a joy to use. Except for one point, use at night.

In dark surroundings - a major selling point for this camera - all displays start flashing after a few seconds. I find that quite irritating. The rear LCD can be turned off, but the top display must be used to operate the camera and the flashing is a constant irritation. The flashing in the viewfinder I think is a minor annoyance but would be happy to be able to turn it off.

(You can simulate this situation by turning the camera on with the lens cap in place and blocking the viewfinder. In daytime, the flashing is no problem, the problem is at night when your eyes adapt to darkness.)

The flashing of the figures displayed in the viewfinder and top LCD are an exposure warning.
There is insufficient light to expose your images adequately according to the camera's metering mode and exposure setting allowances.

Hello Ash and thank you for your answer!

I understand that the camera warns that the light situation is outside the capability of the metering system.

But I want to use the camera in spite of that and find the flashing objectionable. How is it turned off?

I use the K5 at night a lot, even in pitch black darkness. But the lights never bother me. You can turn of both displays... And at night, you don't see anything whatsoever through the viewfinder, so why bother?

Hi mickeyobe: I do use tape to block less vital informatinon, lika that flash symbol that pulsates unless you are outdoors on a really sunny day. But I need the shutter/aperture and perhaps ISO settings and taping them over is no solution.

Hi Clavius! Lucky you!

Answer from Pentax Europe

I got an answer from Pentax Europe.

The only thing to do is to black out the rear screen (which I learnt from another post can be done so that it is blacked out even when you turn on the camera) and to take away the illumination from the top display. What you see in the viewfinder cannot be adjusted.

Pentax has no plans right now for a firmware upgrade, but Pentax Europe sent the idea to Japan.

When the rear LCD bothers me at night, I hit the Info button twice. On my K-7, that shuts off the rear screen. Hitting Info again or shutting off then on again gets back to the regular screen. I haven't been bothered by any other illuminations (actually like them) so I don't know how to disable them.
