Samsung lenses on pentax

Hello,

Every now and then, I bump into gear that says for Pentax/Samsung. For example my Metz flash.

Admittedly I am mainly interested in lenses. Found some threads here that seems to support compatibility, but doesn't say it outright.

Are camera products from Samsung in general compatible with Pentax?
....If so, could they be worth considering?

There are some lenses and accessories that are both Pentax and Samsung compatible. However buy with caution. For a brief time there was a Pentax and Samsung partnership in which the K10 and K20 were Samsung sensors. In return Pentax offered to help with Samsung's DSLR bodies GX10 and GX20. Optics wise the lenses made at that time for Samsung are virutally identical to the Pentax variant other than cosmetics I believe. They were classified as D-Xenon. The new lenses made for the NX series cameras for Samsung are not compatible nor are the lenses pre-partnership.

There was also a short lived Samsung film slr in the late 90's. Lenses for this orphaned mount occasionally come up for sale. They also do not work with Pentax.

Samsung sold versions of the K10D and K20D, called the GS10 and GS20. They are basically identical to the Pentax models, with a few minor differences. For example, the Samsung versions do not produce PEF format RAW files. The do, however, produce DNG files.

It is those two cameras that advertisers are referring to. I don't believe that Samsung currently offers a dslr. The GS10 and GS20 use identical lens mounts as the Pentax. There is no fear of slight incompatibilities, like the infamous "Ricoh Pin".

Samsung dslrs also use the same p-ttl flash system as Pentax.

I don't see a reason to give up, there are quite a few that fit, for example (from wikipedia):

Schneider-Kreuznach D-Xenogon 35mm f2 (2006-) (rebadged SMC PENTAX-FA 1:2 35mm AL, 1999-)
Schneider-Kreuznach D-Xenon 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 AF (2007- ) (rebadged SMC PENTAX-DA 1:3.5-5.6 18-55mm AL, 2004- )
Schneider-Kreuznach D-Xenon 100mm MACRO 1:2.8 (2007-) (rebadged SMC PENTAX-D FA 1:2.8 100mm MACRO, 2004-)
Schneider-Kreuznach D-Xenogon 10-17mm F3.5-4.5 ED (2007- ) (rebadged SMC PENTAX-DA FISH-EYE 1:3.5-4.5 10-17mm ED (IF), 2006-)
Schneider-Kreuznach D-Xenon 12-24mm f4 ED (2007- ) (rebadged SMC PENTAX-DA 1:4 12-24mm ED AL (IF), 2005-)
Schneider-Kreuznach D-Xenon 50-200mm f/4-5.6 AF (2006-) (rebadged SMC PENTAX-DA 1:4-5.6 50-200mm ED, 2005-)

There may be others.

Nah... I wouldn't say that.. I bought the D-XENON 12-24mm in November for much cheaper than I'd have been able to buy the pentax version which is pretty damn good considering they are identical in EVERY way other than branding.. (even the same element coating). If you're looking at a particular DA lens you should check if there's a Samsung re-badged one before you purchase.

Hmm, I have been checking for a 12-24 samsung and I havent seen one, but the prices on the samsung lenses seem to be higher than the Pentax from what I've seen(ebay). I havent been looking long though.

Yeah the Samsung variants seems to fetch more than the Pentax counterparts. I'm not sure if it has to do with availability or just perception that they are uncommon. I know when they were sold new at Henry's (Canadian Photo store) they were priced more expensive then the Pentax version. Atleast the 50-200 that they had, approximately $30 more than the Pentax. However, I did like the blue trim made it look unique.

the 50-200mm was the second lens I bought for my Kx, it was advertised as a PENTAX-DA 1:4-5.6 50-200mm (Samsung)
I was a bit confused when bought it from the marketplace on this forum.
It is a Schneider-Kreuznach D-Xenon 50-200mm f/4-5.6 AF (2006-)
one lens badge says D-Xenon another says Samsung, the lens cap and hood and box all say Samsung. Iv'e had it a year, works great. Cheaper than the penax branded version.
