I added a second layer of tape as the shim, and the focusing is just about perfect now.

The only problem with the split focusing screen is that half of it turns black when there isn't a whole bunch of light. even at f4, it is hard to look just right through the view finder and still be able to see through both sides of the split prism.

Maybe I should try a focusing screen with just the depth of field ring and not have the split prism.
