What tool do You use when you take that off? Because mine is on there pretty good.
I can use my fingers - (I'm a musician my hands are pretty strong) it is possibly Pentax has used a glue of some sort to bind the thread - which is annoying. I wouldn't recommend forcing it as you might break something.

Yeah, this lens is the newest I've seen (SN: 166****) and I'd assume they use something like loctite to keep the lens together. I don't have many large tools, and I don't feel like damaging this lens.

I'll offer the seller a couple options and see where we can go from here.

Thanks for all your help and patience!

It's got Japan stamped in the side, there's no other country anywhere on the lens.

Update: the seller is being uncooperative (won't accept a return, won't help with repair costs) so it looks like I'm going to have to do this myself.

Well that's never good. I looked at the original ad where you bought it and there was certainly no mention of any issue, and based on the description of the condition, I would say you had every reason to assume it would focus to infinity without an issue.

Ebay Purchase? Paypal? File a claim if the lens truly is not as advertised.

Appears to be a Marketplace purchase.

After I saw your post, I found it. I remember seeing the ad when it was still active too. Hope it all works out either way. That's a hefty sum to have into a paperweight.

The OP said the s# starts with 166 and that one starts with 142 so use caution before jumping the gun.

The other option would be to send it to Eric Hendrickson. for a CLA.

True, but that is the thread where is link between the buyer and the seller (via feedback). Also, I assume that is the seller based on this post (not sure how long that post will last before it's taken down by a mod).

Perhaps the lens in the pictures wasn't the lens that was sent to him?

Oh hey, the serial on the lens and the serial on the paperwork don't match... well that's just fantastic.

(Unless the lens number is not the serial number?)

I'm not a happy camper at this point.
