Repairing/maintaining lens

My K100D with FA 50mm 1.4 suffered a fall to hard ground. There are no visible signs of impact, but:
  • the focusing ring is not as smooth as it should be, although functional;
  • when gently shaking the lens, it feels like something is loose;
  • there is some dust on internal lenses.
I suspect IQ has suffered a bit, but it's still quite acceptable.

Now, should I try to repair it? And if yes, how? Options I've considered so far:
  1. Repair it myself. If I knew what I was doing (which I don't, yet), I could somehow disassemble and clean it, but I doubt I could address the other points.
  2. Give it to a local repair shop and hope they can do something about it.
  3. Send it to Pentax Germany and hope that it's cheaper than buying a new lens.
BTW, the lens user manual says, „Have the lens inspected by a dealer every one or two years to maintain its high performance”.

So, would you send it to the Pentax service (I guess it costs a bit), go cheap and fix it in some no name repair shop, or it is just not cost effective to repair a 200€ (now more like 370€) lens?

Chances are, from what you describe, the AF mechanism has suffered. Chances further are, something is broken in that mechanism. The problem with fixing it yourself may be locating parts. I would send or take it for an estimate and then decide. I wouldn't be afraid to take it apart myself but if parts are broken I don't have access to, there really isn't much point. Besides, once repaired, the shop can align everything and get it back to its former glory.

Good luck with it either way..

Probably the focusing helix is bent out of round. Pentax will probably replace it if they have the part. You could try to disassemble the lens use a hammer to bend things back into shape and ...... You get the point.
