AF Fine Adjustment

There is no clear information in the K-5 user's manual as to which way to move the adjustment scale to correct front or back focus. So, if a lens is front focussing with the AF scale at 'Unset' or '0' should you dial in a '+' or '-' setting to correct it?

Nikon have a effective method, showing a camera icon at one of the scale and a mountain icon at the other to suggest movement towards or away. Michael Reichmann in Luminous Landscape says put in a minus adjustment for a front focussing lens (which is my instinct), whereas Amateur Photographer magazine, in a recent article on focus adjustment, says do the opposite, ie input a '+' setting for a front focussing lens.

You can see where the confusion arises - anyone with a definitive answer, please?

PS. Spoke to Pentax UK customer service and they didn't know either! Said to try bracketing and see what happens. Not confidence inspiring

This is the second post with this question in the last week. I think I could test it with one or two tries and have the answer much faster than typing in the question. But for those that don't have a K-5 to test with, negative values push the center of the DOF back, further from the camera. So for front-focusing issues, start with a (-5) value and retest.

As far as the person at Pentax-UK not knowing the answer....don't sweat the small stuff.

Thanks, Lee. I posted the question on the beginners' forum without reply after over 360 views so posted it again here.

Thanks for the info - it is as I thought, that a minus input would push the focal plane away from the sensor plane. The readers of Amateur Photographer will be confused!
