Sigma 18-50 f2.8/4.5, or Pentax 18-55 DAL???

So, I've convinced a friend of mine to bump up to DSLR and thankfully kept her away from Canikon's!!! She picked up a KR body, and now looking for a decent starter zoom. I know the DA zooms are pretty good, but I noticed the Sigma is out there which offers HSM focus and IS built in for just $50-$70 more. So, given this.........what's a better choice???

Sigma: $199
Pentax DA: $129-$149

Welcome to the forum.
Although this is a question on lenses, it is better suited to the Beginner's Q&A section. Please consider this for future posts.

As for these lenses, the Pentax kit lens is very good at f/8, whereas the Sigma is more versatile due to its slight edge on speed (maximum aperture setting). So if you're willing to invest more money into a kit lens, the Sigma is a decent choice. However there are even better choices for more speed and sharpness in lenses like the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 and Sigma 17-50 f/2.8
