Some advice required - Birthday Party Shoot

I have been asked to shoot my uncles 70th birthday without much warning and as I am away from university I don't have much equipment :S

I have an old bounce flash but unfortunately it fires at full power all the time on my K7.

The only decent lens I've got with me for the K7 is the DA 12-24mm which I'm pretty sure would handle just fine.

I'm considering either buying a Vivitar 285HV for $115 or renting an AF-540FGZ for 3 days for $60 although I don't know much about the latter. The third alternative I've considered is ditching the K7 all together and shooting Tri-X 400 film on a ME Super push-processed to either 1600 or 3200 with Rodinal developer. I have a 50mm f/1.7 for this camera all-though a 28mm shouldn't be too hard to find at short notice.

What do you guys suggest considering the circumstances?

Many thanks, roliver.

Would a diffuser, store bought or cobbled together, work? I used a cigarette pack diffuser I found online when I was taking pictures at a retirement party for a friend of mine and it did great. Everyone laughed and were all smiles as I snapped away. The end results were very nice.

With a little thought you should be able to take the pictures with what you have.

Ahh, I hadn't thought of that... sounds like a good idea. Do you do this with direct flash or bounced or does it not really matter, my only concern is that if I use the built in flash I may have problems with some of the wider focal lengths. Will have to test this out... I head that those translucent film canisters worked well.

Film canisters don't really do much as they do not have a lot of area, and are still very close to the lens axis. I'd stick with the 12-24 and bounce the flash if possible. There used to be and I'm sure still is a framework that holds an 8x10 or so sheet of white cardboard on the the flash for bouncing, or any of the other bouncing options - though I would not pay more than about $30.

Be very careful with any old flash that was originally intended for a film camera. The trigger voltage can be high enough to fry the electronic synch circuits. Its easy to check with a cheap digital voltmeter. Just charge the flash and test the voltage across the hotshoe contacts.
