They're great cameras- the best way to learn how to use them is to get one!

If you're a beginner, you can use a Pentax K-r just like a P&S camera, except you'll be shooting more through the viewfinder than via the LCD. Also, zooming happens directly on the lens - there's no special button for it on the body.

It is a great camera, especially at its price point. Messing around in the green (auto) mode at first is a good idea, and as you get familiar with the controls, and read the manual, try using Av mode. Remember you need to set your ISO in that mode, either fixed or to a range.

Probably the most important thing is to not be afraid to try out all the possibilities. With no wasted film, it doesn't matter if you burn off a few hundred shutter clicks just experimenting, and seeing "changing this results in that" has got to be the best way to learn and remember it.

As your first DSLR, you'll be blown away by what the K-r can do. Have fun with it.

Don't hesitate any longer. I got mine in March this year - 1st DSLR - after 35+ years with film SP1000. I wanted to stick with Pentax and I have absolutely no regrets. I did a lot of research on the net first including this forum and the K-r got consistently good reviews all over the world. They're all justified. I'm only an amateur but I'm using and testing mine every day. Simply a fabulous camera with enormous flexibility and available at very good prices.
