Shutter only fires sometimes with manual lens - sears 50mm f1.7

I have an ist*DS. I have and shoot with manual k - mount lenses all the time. I have never had any problems with any of them - until today, and I am stumped.

When I press the shutter, it only will fire some of the the time. Without rhyme or reason as far as I can tell. Focus confirmation appears to act the same way. Some times it will perform focus confirmation, sometimes it won't. If it does, then it will normally allow me to trip the shutter, but there is a 1 to 2 second shutter lag.

Does anyone else have anything like this going on? All of my other manual lenses seem to work wonderfully.

Thanks ahead of time for any help or ideas!

Is there a setting in the menu of the *istD that prevents the shutter firing if focus lock is not achieved. IIRC my K100D and K20D both had this setting. Maybe you turned it on by accident.

I realized that I had the focus switch set to "auto" rather than manual. I just hadn't done that before. Thank you for your response. I feel a little silly now...

Thanks Again!

Jon -

I just discovered the same behavior this weekend when trying an A lens for the first time. I'm curious why it still occasionally fires, but the lack of firing is now my reminder to switch to manual focus.

Where is the AF conttrol switch set.

If it is in AF-S then you have discovered "trap focusing" in AF-S the shutter wont fire if you don't have focus confirmation.

In AF-C or M the shutter will fire when you press, regardless of focus confirmation
