There's in-camera (jpeg only, I believe) that you enable via Info > Custom Image and select monochrome.
I prefer to shoot in raw and convert to b&w in Lightroom (or Picasa before I got LR). That gives a lot more control.

Sure, it's easy, you use only the black cartridge from your printer (joking). page 194-195 in the manual, or you can use software to convert to BW.

Thanks

I can't see any way of getting b&w on the camera I've got with those - maybe I'm missing something - so I'll go the software way;I'm copying a long manuscript in an archive, and don't want huge files;

thanks, JohnG

It's in Custom Image. The last one is BW.

Press "info" / square in the top left corner / press left until you get "BW"

Did you read the manual ?

Even if you shoot B&W, you'll still have large files, since B&W is really grayscale You'd need to convert to another file format - other than JPEG - to really see a size savings when shooting documents.

Who asked for lowering file size? And black and white is one area where raw gives you a real advantage in smooth gradations with thousands instead of hundreds of intermediate levels.
