Dust in a Teleconverter and it's effects

I sometimes use a 2x converter on my K100d, not very often as I reckon it softens things a bit, but handy sometimes.
Now my question is, if the converter has dust specks in it, will these be visible at twice normal size in the picture ?
At the moment I'm using a 18-200mm Sigma zoom, if I aim this at the sky either zoomed or wide, no specks are
noticable in the picture.
Enter the converter and many spicks and specks appear, so my thinking is that the dust is in the converter as all is
fine without it.
So if the image comes through a nice clean lens, through a maybe dusty converter and onto a clean sensor, do you
think the dust in the converter will affect or show in the image.

Generally you can only see dust that's on the sensor - at least that's been my experience!

It would be the same as dust or fingerprints or whatever on any of the reflective and refractive surfaces that is away from the focal plane (sensor) and will not show up directly on pictures, but would manifest with lower contrast, flare and maybe even reduced sharpness
