Pentax Telephoto Lens?

So far I have all of these things for the k-5, I just got the K-5 recently so I am still new. The furthest zoom I have is the 50-135. I would like to get a little more zoom perhaps for sports etc. I have been looking into the Sigma 70-200 mm, Pentax DA* 200 mm prime and DA* 300 mm prime but I am not sure of what to get. Any ideas? Thanks.

FA 31 mm, FA 77 mm, FA 43 mm, DA * 50-135, tamron 90 mm macro, sigma 8-16 mm fish eye, tamron 17-50 mm, regular k-5 18-55 mm kit lens.

A good sports lens is the Tamron 70-200mm F2.8 ($699):

The sigma might be slightly better in terms of AF speed and handling, but not IQ.

I use a Sigma 150-500 for Aussie rules and cricket shots. I understand that the playing fileds are significantly bigger than those used for gridiron, and vastly bigger than basketball. I guess what I'm getting at is.. which sports do you have in mind?

a 200mm prime would probably be fabulous for Basketball, but too short for the other side of an Aussie rules field. It all depends

Maybe the other option for you is a teleconverter for the 50-135?

I was thinking of soccer and perhaps wildlife. I am in NYC so I'll probably use the zoom for places I can't reach. How well do teleconverters work? Any input on the Sigma 100-300 F/4? Thanks for the help guys.

As I understand it, TC's are the same as any piece of optics. It depends on the quality of the glass. Some are very expensive, but have superb glass in them, some are cheap n nasty. Ya gets what ya pay for.

Any and all TC's have one thing in common though, they result in a loss of light at the sensor. In effect they 'stop down' your lens. That DA 50-135 F2.8 will be a 70-190mm F4 lens with a 1.4x TC attached. It will be a 100-270 F5.6 with a 2x TC attached and probably be too dark for the autofocus to work.

If you do get a TC for the DA* lens make sure it has the PZ function, or your AF will not work at all. The SDM motor gets its power from the PZ contats of the K mount. (As I found out from experience )

Speaking from experience, shooting soccer with a DA*300 gets you great results when the action is across the field. Having a quality zoom gives A LOT more flexibility as your target moves towards you and away.

I shoot a lot of soccer games for my sons 10 year old team. He plays outdoors in well lit areas so my main lens is the DA 55-300 f4-5.8 which is a great lens if you have the light needed (and a great value, too). I just recently purchased the Tamron 70-200 f2.8 mentioned earlier for my daughters indoor volleyball (I also have the DA* 50-135 which I used last year with great results, but wanted more reach).

Good luck.

I just recieved (happy me) the DA* 60-250. Having only played with it for an hour, it seems to me that it would be ideal for your purpose. It is 'only' F4, but with todays sensor technology, I dont feel that is much of an issue. It will give you almost the reach of the 300mm and vastly more flexibility than either of the long DA primes. Its sharp-sharp.

Just a thought.

Thanks! I might just get the 60-250 mm. I have a metz blitz 58 AF-2 too. In wireless mode the image stabilization is disabled is this normal? Also is it possible to make the flash on the k-5 control the metz 58 to flash only, i.e. only the metz 58 is flashing? Thanks.

page 192 of the K-5 manual states that SR is turned off in wireless mode. I had never noticed this before. I'm at a loss to understand why.

I haven't the K5 nor its manual so I must ask: is that wireless REMOTE mode or wireless FLASH mode? My K20D shuts-off SR in wireless REMOTE mode because it assumes the camera is tripodded. Switching-off SR in wireless FLASH mode makes no sense!

I just bought a used and when I got home I played around with it I went pale, the auto-focus didn't seem to work! HSM/SDM-issue? It took a while before I realized that it just tricked by being so dead-quiet and fast that I actually failed to notice that it was auto-focusing the whole time. Never jump to conclusions.
