Samsung GX20

Hello all,

I need some sound advice, I have a Samsung GX20 with the standard kit lens (18-55), I am looking for a new lens, my problem is I don't actually know what lens are compatible with my DSLR. Aside from Samsung, I even emailed Sigma in London and they told me none of their lens are compatible with my camera yet online somewhere I found that there are some Sigmas that are.

So I am totally lost, after days of research I find lens but not sure which ones are compatible and which ones are not, is there just one site with a list that I can pick from? Or is it not as easy as that?

Another issue I would like some help on is that whats a prime lens and whats the difference between that and a zoom lens? With a budget of 500 I would like to buy two lens if possible, one with a zoom up to and around 200mm and another to replace my current 18-55 since I believe its not a good lens as far as kit lens come.

Thanks for reading people, I look forward to discussing and receiving some help!

All the lenses listed here will be compatible- there's a total of 37 new Sigma lenses in addition to dozens of Pentax lenses are available.

Pentax Reviews - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database
Third-Party Lenses for Pentax - Pentax Lens Review Database

If you want a good walkaround lens I would look into either a Sigma 17-70 2.8-4 OS HSM, Tamron 17-50 f2.8 or Pentax 17-70mm F4. See the database for deets.

See also this in-depth review which does a cross-brand comparison so you can get a feel for what's out there.

The GX20 is pretty much the same camera as the Pentax K20... It deffo shares the K-mount... As Adam says all lenses in the database will work...

A prime lens is a lens with a single focal length; so instead of the multiple focal lengths of e.g.18-55 it is e.g. 55 only. You have to zoom with your feet to get the subject larger or smaller.

The kit lens is a good lens. There are better lenses around, but you pay more

If you can stretch the budget a bit SRS has
Tamron SP 17-50mm F2.8 XR Di II LD Aspherical [IF] - Pentax Fit - Only 299.00 - SRS Microsystems 299
Pentax smc DA 55-300mm f4.0-5.8 ED Lens - Only 269.00 - SRS Microsystems 269

And they have some second hand stuff as well on Used Pentax Fit AF Lenses - Used Equipment - Page 1 - SRS Microsystems

London Camera Exchange might be another shop to look at.

Thank you so much, now I have to spend weeks seeing which one but again choices are better than no choices at all, thank you.

I had a budget of 500 but since I have recently saved money on a flight, Iv got around 900 to spend, and Im always wary of second stuff, but again thank you.

Thanks for that advice, but what I don't understand is why would you want a prime lens when you can just have a zoom lens? I mean surely there's more to the fact that its a set focal length?

And Thanks you all again (inc Dave)

Zoom lenses are compromises and therefor the image quality is not always optimal. They are also bigger and heavier; 2 or 3 DA Limiteds covering the range of e.g. a 17-70 are probably smaller and lighter (together). Zoom lenses are also not as fast; I think Olympus has/had a f/2 zoom lens, but I don't think you will ever find a f/1.7 or faster zoom.

Yet... One has to assume that lens designers have at least 'toyed' with the idea but I imagine that the costs would be enormous!

A bit of an old post but I settled for Sigma AF 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG HSM, didn't go for a prime lens or a zoom lens that exceeded up to even a 100mm, I think I need more practice than to just throw away money, but I am pleased with this lens as it improves on the kit lens giving me enough scope to do what I like for now till I decided I need a longer zoom!

Thanks again people!
