Shooting a 50mm lens with 50mm extension for 1:1 magnification means you'll be working about 50mm from the subject(s). Do you really want to put the lens 2 inches from your corals? Won't it get wet?

Just how much magnification do you need? See image below that shows how much you can achieve with a Pentax-M Macro 50mm F4, or the macro on a Pentax Bellows K minimum and maximum extension on a K20D.

went to aviary with the Tamron 70-300 yesterday, weed through them, theres a few good ones for shooting on auto one handed indoors while holding my 2 year old son while he tried to push the buttons too.

Wow only a year later, I read a few of my original posts from last year and I sounded like an idiot. Aint it something how you think you take great photos just to learn more and find out later you never knew as much as you think you did. Oh to getting old
