An "A" series lens (one with the "A" setting on the aperture ring) should work in all modes on any Pentax dslr. Simply set the aperture to "A" and shoot as you would with the latest autofocus lens. The only thing that it will not be able to do is autofocus.
If the aperture ring is set to any other setting, you must enable the use of the aperture ring via a menu option. If you do not, the top LCD will flash "F---". But then, there's really no reason to do that. I prefer to set the lens to "A" and use the e-dials to adjust the aperture and shutter speed.
Make sure that the electrical contacts on both the camera and lens are clean and undamaged. I find that a pencil eraser is good for removing the slight oxidation that can occur. Just be sure that the little rubber shavings don't get into the camera.
