The super program is smaller and it supports P, Tv, Av, M modes, whereas the K1000 is M only. The K1000 is more of a classic, though- and it never breaks, but super program is my favorite film pentax because of its build quality and versatility, and small size.

The k1000 is THE student camera, but you can use almost any old pentax for the purpose as long as it's got m mode. You can see which do and which don't in the camera db.

The Super Program isn't super easy to use in M mode, IMO. It has a pair of buttons to toggle shutter speed, so changing shutter speed is sequential and slower than just dialing a knob.

For a class like this, the K100 is better, though the Super Program will work if necessary.

I'd consider buying a K1000, using it for the class, and remaining open to reselling the K1000 when you are done. You will probably get back what you paid so long as you shop around just a little to make sure your paying price is fair. Beware of craigslisters who think the K1000 and a 50/2.0 are worth $500.

Forget Craigslist or eBay for manual focus cameras. KEH is your best bet for a camera in working condition. You can also get lucky on shopgoodwill.com, but most cameras of that era will need a CLA. You might want to consider a P series camera.

Or if you can spend a bit more the MX or KX

I have both a K1000 and a P30t. Both are easy to use fully manual. The dials are similar on the two.
