Can ring flash AF040C be used as trigger for AF540FGZ?

I think the title asks the question, I have a K7 and would like to put some light to the side of my images, I see the pop up flash is used to trigger the 540 wirelessly and this works, but can I get the ring flash to trigger it?
I'm sure many years ago I had a photoelectric (?) cell to trigger a slave unit with my old ME Super about 30 years ago, can this still be done?
Am I missing something simple, I have read the instructions for the 540 and that says I can use two 540's together, but no other combination.
Any advise?

I don't think that the older ringflash can trigger the modern wireless system, but I'm not 100% sure.

Yes. In SL2 mode, the AF540FGZ acts as a "dumb" optical slave flash. It can be triggered by any strobe.

See page 52 of the manual.
